About

Who we are

Bushika Integrated Area Cooperative Enterprise

We produce and trade both Organic and Fairtrade Certified Arabica coffee as our own main value chain. This coffee is grown on the highland slopes of Mt. Elgon’s volcanic soils at altitudes between 1500 and 2500 metres above sea level which is best recommended for growing this variety of coffee.
We collect this coffee from small individual farmers within the region i.e traceability is key and we have a full washing station i.e all required processes are followed.
We produce SL14, SL28, and cutimor 127 coffee varieties.

Brief Background

We are located in Khama Cell, Khama Ward, Nangako Town Council, Manjiya County, Bududa District in the Eastern part of Uganda. Started in May 2010 with ten(10) primary cooperative societies coming together. It is formally registered with the Registrar of Cooperatives of the Republic of Uganda on 27th March 2017 with its Registration Number 10865/RCS as a secondary level cooperative: Area Cooperative Enterprises (ACE).

Why we exist

After experiencing a number of challenges eg poor markets of our produces, hard to access quality inputs, often cheated by middlemen by offering very low prices to our produce, hard to attract government programmes and technical services from the local government/NGOs. To solve some of the above mentioned challenges, Bushika Integrated ACE was formed to market its members produce. this was through promoting bulking (collective marketing)

Membership

Membership base has continued to grow since its formation i.e between 2015 and 2016 the ACE had 22 organizations which totalled to 2600 individual farmers. In 2017, the ACE had 38 organisations totalling to 3040 individual farmers. currently BIACE has raised increased organizational growth from 38 organizations in 2017 to 45 organisations totalling to 4875 farmers of which 1889 farmers are actively involved in the coffee value chains. Other enterprises which support the value chain are Dairy, Beans, Bananas etc.
